On the 9 December 2009, in his Pre-Budget Report, the Chancellor announced details of a boiler scrappage scheme to start as soon as possible in 2010.
The scheme is designed to help householders with older Band G boilers lower their fuel bills and reduce the carbon footprint of homes.
Details released so far say that £400 is available for up to 125,000 households to upgrade their old Band G rated boilers to a new high efficiency SEDBUK Band A boiler. In addition extra resources will be made available for Warm Front to help 75,000 of the most vulnerable households with heating and insulation.
How the boiler scrappage scheme will work
The grants will be administered by the Energy Saving Trust (EST) and vouchers will be issued from 18th January onwards. The offer is for up to 125,000 homeowners and will run on a first come, first served basis.
Homeowners are able to apply for a grant immediately and can arrange for their boiler to be replaced now by their chosen installer.
Applicants will be entitled to the grant, providing the installer is Gas Safe or OFTEC registered and they have a Band G boiler.
Vouchers can be redeemed against any A rated gas, oil or LPG boiler, Microgeneration Certification Scheme-registered biomass boilers and heat pumps. Solar thermal systems are also included if combined with an eligible boiler replacement. Electric boilers, however, will not be eligible.
Vouchers are valid for 12 weeks from the date of issue. If the voucher is not redeemed within this time, it will be cancelled and reallocated.

The Energy Saving Trust's dedicated website offers all you need to know, including a guide to identifying if you have a 'Band G' efficient boiler.
The EST have also set up an enquiry number in conjunction with the 'Act on CO2 Helpline': 0800 512 012.
